The Medical Council of India has granted approval for the MBBS programme of the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI).
An MCI communication on October 9 in this regard from S. Savitha, Assistant Secretary, has been sent to the Secretary, Union Health Ministry, and copied to the Medical Education Secretary and the Dean/Principal, IGMCRI among others.
The approval comes after the MCI executive committee and subsequently its general body evaluated compliance verification reports of its assessors in August, together with the compliance report in April pertaining to deficiencies identified for remedying for considering sanction of the MBBS course.
On finding the IGMCRI’s compliance in redressal of deficiencies satisfactory, the MCI executive committee approved the award of MBBS degree (150 seats) granted by Pondicherry University under section 11(2) of the IMC Act, 1956.
By statute, the recognition so granted to an undergraduate course for award of the MBBS degree shall be for a maximum period of five years, upon which it would have to be reassessed. Further, the procedure for renewal of recognition shall be similar as that for award for recognition. Failure to seek timely renewal of recognition shall result in stoppage of admissions to the concerned MBBS course, the MCI said.
The MCI has requested the Health Ministry to issue necessary notification recognising the IGMCRI for the award of MBBS degree “when granted on or after December 2014.”
The recognition so granted will be for a maximum of 5 years
