A four-member team from Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College has done the institution proud by finishing runners-up in the finals of the “India Innovation Challenge Design Contest 2018 – IICDC 2018”, the results of which were announced recently.

The event was held by Texas Instruments and Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, N.S. Raghavan Centre of Entrepreneurial Learning and MyGov.

The team comprising Nallam Ramalakshmi, N. Karpagam, R. Soniya and R. Aswini are pursuing B. tech final year from the department of electrical and electronics engineering.

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College had participated in the final round of IICDC 2018, which was held at IIM, Bangalore in July.

They developed and exhibited a project titled ‘Mustard Seed Processor (MSP) Machine’ which integrates harvesting, cutting and grading of mustard in a single machine, under the guidance of K. Thangaraj, Assistant Professor, EEE, SMVEC.

The contest held in Bengaluru was open to students from Indian engineering colleges who have a dream to create something new.

In IICDC-2018 project competition, 10,146 batches from 1,760 colleges participated from all over India.

The team of students from the city submitted 30 innovative project proposals for this project competition.

The team was shortlisted among 346 teams for the quarter final round, among 60 teams for the semi finals and among 30 teams for the final round of the innovation challenge.

They received a cash prize of ₹25,000 for being shortlisted as semi-finalists and also a product development fund of ₹5 lakh from the Department of Science & Technology for developing their prototype as product. They also received a cash prize of ₹2 lakh for being second runner-up in the finals.

The students were appreciated for their innovative work by Padma Jaiswal, I.A.S., Secretary, Directorate of IT, Government of Puducherry.

The Chairman and Managing Director, M. Dhanasekaran, vice-chairman S. V. Sugumaran M.L.A., Secretary K. Narayanaswamy, director-cum-principal V. S. K. Venkatachalapathy, head of the department of electrical and electronics engineering S. Anbumalar and the coordinators P. Raja and B. Parthiban, AP/EEE, also felicitated the students.

Orientation programme

for freshers held

An orientation programme for first year students for the academic year 2019-20 was conducted at IFET College, Villupuram.

The college chairman K.V. Raja, vice-chairman A. Mohamed Ilyas, Secretary K. Shivram Alva, principal G. Mahendran, vice-principal S. Matilda, Dean Placement J. Asha, heads of various departments, faculty, first-year students and their parents participated in the programme.

The members of the management explained the benefits of studying in autonomous institutions and emphasised the need to study engineering in the current scenario.

The details of the revision to the curriculum to suit industry needs were also explained to the students and their parents.

Cash awards worth ₹5,40,000 were distributed to 47 meritorious senior students who had secured highest percentage of marks in university exams.

One-day seminar

on entrepreneurship

Theivanai Ammal College For Women, Department of Commerce, Villupuram, conducted a one-day national seminar on “Fostering Entrepreneurship For Sustainable Economic Development”.

G. Raju, Professor & Head, Department of Commerce, University of Kerala, was the chief guest.

S. Selvakumar, Head of Commerce, Deputy Registrar, E. Soundararajan, college Secretary S. Senthilkumar and T.R. Anandhi, assistant professor, spoke.

Delegates and participants from various colleges presented research papers.
