Yoga has for long been an integral aspect of Puducherry’s cultural heritage. With the United Nations declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga following a proposal made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, organisations and institutes have arranged for a variety of programmes to commemorate the day in Puducherry.

At the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), a monthlong yoga camp has been under way since May 21.

It has been organised by the Advance Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and Research (ACYTER) in collaboration with the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), under the Union Ministry of AYUSH.

The yoga camp includes yoga classes, special sessions for senior citizens and women, and yoga clinics for consultations for common diseases like diabetes and hypertension, said a press release from the institute.

The camp will culminate on June 21 with a Workshop-cum-Seminar on Yoga, with participation of yoga experts from India and abroad. ACYTER was given a grant of Rs. 1 lakh to celebrate International Yoga Day by CCRYN.

The Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and Research (CYTER) of the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI) is organising a public awareness programme at the MGMCRI City Centre (near Balaji theatre) in collaboration with the Pondicherry Yogasana Association from 7 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on June 21.

There will be a Mass Yoga Practice as per the Yoga Day Protocol guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of AYUSH.

The programme will have lecture-demonstrations on managing diabetes through yoga, yogic management of cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and back and neck pain, yoga for women and children, apart from talks by experts and yoga demonstrations. The public can sign up for free yoga therapy consultations and sessions. The Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University which runs MGMCRI is organising yoga awareness programmes for medical and paramedical students of its constituent colleges from June 22 to 25.

A seminar and continuing medical education programme on ‘Therapeutic Potential of Yoga’ will be held on June 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at MGMCRI, Pillaiyarkuppam.

On June 21, NCC cadets and officers of the NCC Group Headquarters in Lawspet, will join their counterparts across the country in a bid to create a world record for yoga done in a mass scale on the same day, coordinated by the Union Ministry of AYUSH.

The public can sign up for free yoga therapy consultations and sessions.
