Karaikal Port to mechanise bulk material handling

₹600 crore project is expected to ensure zero handling loss

The Karaikal Port has invested ₹600 crore in mechanisation for bulk material handling, which will increase productivity and protect environment, according to its promoter director G.R.K. Reddy.

The mechanisation envisages direct unloading through a ship unloader and handling through a conveyer automatic stacker-cum-re-claimer. The process helps in the auto-loading system into wagons and trucks. The procedure will ease the bulk cargo handling system at the port and ensure zero handling loss. “We have taken steps to enhance the efficiency of the port by integrating mechanisation process for smooth and environment friendly bulk cargo handling. Despite a dip in the GDP growth, we have invested ₹600 crore in mechanisation for improving the port operations” Mr. Reddy said in a press release.
