Jipmer moots centre for organ transplantation

Dedicated organ sharing and transport services will be part of the centre

Jipmer is planning to establish a dedicated centre for organ transplantation which could be the first such comprehensive centre in the country covering a wide spectrum of organ and tissue transplantation.

A concept proposal for a dedicated centre for organ transplantation was approved by the governing body of Jipmer. The centre is proposed at an expenditure of ₹590 crore in stages. The centre, which will be designed on international standards, is expected to benefit huge number of patients waiting for organ transplant in South India, a press release said.

200 beds with ICU

It will provide transplantation services for all organs and tissues such as kidney, liver, heart, pancreas, intestine, bone marrow and hand. It will have facilities for organ and tissue banking. There will be seven departments and another seven divisions in the area of organ and tissue transplantation. The hospital part is planned with 200 beds including 65 ICU beds.

Dedicated organ sharing and transport services will be part of the centre so that all the available organs are maximally used for transplantation.

It will also act as a training centre for doctors and paramedical professionals in the areas of organ and tissue transplantation. Earmarked research facilities will be developed in the proposed centre.

Advisory panel formed

Dr. S.C. Parija, Director, Jipmer said that a high level advisory committee had been constituted for the Institute of Organ Transplantation.

The committee will help Jipmer to finalise the concept proposal and to provide specific inputs in terms of infrastructure, facilities, academic, research and other requirements. The members of the committee include Dr. S.K. Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Bilairy Sciences (ILBS), Delhi; Dr. Vimal Bhandari, Director, National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Government of India; Dr. Mohammed Rela, Professor of Liver Transplant Surgery at Kings College Hospital, London; Dr. Jeyan Parameswar, Deputy Director, Pappworth Cardiac Transplant Centre, U.K.; Dr. Pranjal Modi, Chief of Organ Transplant Programme, Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre, Ahmedabad and Dr. K.M. Cherian, Chairman of Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai.

Dr. Biju Pottakkat, secretary of Jipmer Multiorgan Transplantation Programme, said that a detailed project report will be prepared in a few months incorporating all the advances in the field of organ transplantation. The centre will extend its services to people mainly in south India as well as other areas of the country.
