Puducherry based Human Rights and Consumer Protection Society (HRCPS) has urged the Puducherry Legal Services Authority to initiate steps and review the case of prisoners lodged in the Central Prison at Kalapet and recommend their premature release.

In a statement, R. Muruganantham, executive secretary of HRCPS said that a section of prisoners had observed fast in the Central Prison recently demanding the premature release of the life-convicts.

He said that prisons should become rehabilitation centres for inmates and help them to lead a dignified life after their release. The Puducherry Legal Services Authority should consider the case of convicts in the Central Prison and assess their physical and mental health and recommend the premature release of convicts to the Government, he added.
