Unauthorised shops being removed by workers of Oulgaret Municipality from the vicinity of Jipmer in Puducherry on Friday.

Officials of the Oulgaret Municipality, accompanied by police personnel, removed encroachments in front of commercial establishments on the Tindivanam Road in Gorimedu on Friday.

An official said that around 30 shops had encroached upon the platforms up to the end of the road, causing traffic congestion in the area. Almost all shops had encroached on the platforms and the national highway. A few medical shops had erected unauthorised structures such as cupboards and signboards on the pavements on their own.

This hindered the movement of vehicles and resulted in traffic piling up on the road leading to the government quarters and the ESI hospital.

The municipality served notices on the people, asking them to remove encroachments. But none of them had responded to the notices. The civic body would continue the drive and remove all encroachments, he added.
