Elaborate arrangements have been made at the Women’s Polytechnic College and Motilal Nehru Polytechnic for counting of votes to the lone Lok Sabha seat and bypoll for Thattanchavady Assembly election. The counting of votes will start at 8 a.m. on Friday.
The votes for Karaikal region will be counted at Aringar Anna Government Arts and Science College, for Mahe at Jawaharlal Nehru Government Higher Secondary School and for Yanam at the Mini Civil Station.
The Election Commission has deployed eight counting observers for Puducherry region, two for Karaikal region and one each for Mahe and Yanam to oversee the counting process.
Polling for the Lok Sabha and Assembly was held on April 18. The main contest for the Lok Sabha seat is between V. Vaithilingam of the Congress and K. Narayanasamy of the All India N.R. Congress.
The Makkal Needhi Maiam, led by actor-politician Kamal Haasan, has fielded former MLA M.A.S. Subramanian.
The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), led by R.K. Nagar MLA T.T.V. Dhinakaran, has fielded former journalist Tamizh Maran for the Lok Sabha polls.
For the prestigious Thattanchavady byelection, the All India N.R. Congress has fielded party founder leader N. Rangasamy’s nephew Nedounzejiane against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate K. Venketesan. The Congress had given the seat to its alliance partner DMK based on an understanding reached between both during 2016 Assembly elections.
