Cadres of the Puducherry unit of the DMK on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Railway station here to register their protest against the de-recognition of a student group by the IIT, Madras administration.

Slogans raised

The cadres led by DMK (South) coordinator and former MLA R. Siva raised slogans against the IIT Madras administration and the Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani for taking action against the Ambedkar-Periyar student circle.

He said the IIT Madras administration had banned the student circle without seeking any explanation from the students.

The move of the administration is undemocratic and has definitely gagged the freedom of speech of the students.

The ruling AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu was also remaining silent without making any statement on the issue.

Mr. Siva also criticised Chief Minister N. Rangasamy with remaining silent and not making any statement on the banning of the student circle.

People in the Union Territory have lost faith in ruling AINRC and would teach a fitting lesson in the Assembly elections in 2016, he said.

Activists burn copy of letter

Meanwhile, activists of the Federation for People’s Rights and various political parties burnt a copy of the letter sent by the HRD Ministry to IIT Madras administration accusing the student group of inciting hatred.

G. Sugumaran, secretary of Federation for People’s Rights has claimed that the student circle had been banned for criticising the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the policies of the centre.
