Deepavali incentive for workers sought

October 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The Puducherry unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the Government to provide Rs.2,000 as Deepavali incentive to workers belonging to the unorganised sector.

In a statement, V. Saminathan, general secretary of the BJP said that the closure of a large number of industries in the Union Territory had rendered over 50,000 workers jobless. Most of the workers were doing odd jobs to supplement their income.

The Government should enrol workers in the welfare board for unorganised sector and disburse Rs.2,000 each as Deepavali incentive. The workers were the worst affected as they had not enrolled with the welfare board for unorganised workers and no social security had been provided to them by the Government.

It should revisit the implementation of welfare schemes and expand it to include workers belonging to the unorganised sector, he said.
