‘Decide on premature release of convicts’

October 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Human Rights and Consumer Protection Society has sent representations to the Union Government and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to take a decision on the premature release of convicts who have been languishing in jails for long.

In a representation to the Union Home Affairs Ministry, the society’s executive secretary R. Muruganantham said there are 105 convict prisoners lodged in the Central Prison.

Receiving RTI replies from the authorities, he said, 61 convicts have been languishing in jail for 14 years and above and 35 completed 10 years and above.

Mr. Muruganantham pointed out that the Supreme Court in number of cases ordered the State governments to review periodically the cases of life convicts in the light of powers given to them under the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code and take action to set them at liberty. “Another sour point is that scores of under-trial prisoners are languishing in prison for months and sometimes years together without any remedy,” he added.
