Schools in the Union Territory reopened on a festive note on Friday after two-month-long summer vacation. Officials at the Department of Education said that books had been dispatched to all the schools and they would be distributed to over 1.15 lakh students in all Government schools.

For hundreds of tiny tots it was their first day at school. They were reluctant to enter inside the classrooms and parents had a tough time consoling them. Teachers welcomed them with sweets and special programmes were organised to make them feel at home.

The reopening was celebrated at all government and aided schools with prayers, songs and distribution of sweets. The Puducherry Government had directed all schools to observe ‘Pravesham Utsav’, a function to welcome students on the first day of the academic year.

Ministers and MLAs visited various schools here and inspected the arrangements made for the start of the academic year. Most of the buildings were spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and the campuses were cleaned up for reopening.

Inaugurating the distribution of free uniforms and textbooks at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Kathir Gamam, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said the Government was committed to improving the quality of academic excellence in all schools in the Union Territory.

The quality of government schools has started improving with many of them registering an increase in pass percentage in the SSLC examinations.

However, the pass percentage in government schools in the plus two examinations had dropped owing to shortage of teachers.

Mr. Rangasamy said that vacant posts of teachers in all schools will be filled in a month and schools should ensure 100 per cent pass in the current academic year.
