Cadre of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday resorted to a novel protest by breaking pots in front of the Oulgaret Municipality protesting against the acute drinking water crisis in Pitchaveeranpet under the municipal limits.

The protestors alleged that there had been no proper supply of water in the locality in the last two months.

“Though we have complained to the Commissioner and officials of the municipality several times, they have not come to our rescue,” I. Dinesh Ponniah, State executive committee member of the CPI, said.

The municipal officials had drawn up a plan to install new pipelines in Pitchaveeranpet on August 12. However, Minister for Local Administration N.G. Panneerselvam representing the Oulgaret constituency directed the officials to stop work on installation of a new pipeline, Mr. Ponniah alleged.

The Minister also prevented officials from discharging their duty and had issued oral instructions to transfer them. Mr. Panneerselvam also criticised the officials for carrying out survey for installation of pipeline in the area without his permission, Mr. Ponniah added.

The party would intensify its agitation if the officials failed to resolve the drinking water crisis in the locality at the earliest, he said.
