In a blow to the Congress in Puducherry, veteran leader and former Rajya Sabha MP, P. Kannan, joined the AIADMK on Sunday.

The development came a day after the Congress firmed up an alliance with the DMK. Mr. Kannan was inducted into the AIADMK in a brief meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in Chennai.

A fiery orator who rose through the ranks in the Puducherry Congress, Mr. Kannan has had a troubled relationship with other senior leaders in the party. Sources suspect the move was a culmination of his rivalry with former Union Minister V. Narayanasamy, who currently dominates the party in the Union Territory, thanks to his deep connections with the high command.
