District Collector D. Manikandan on Friday held a meeting with officials to discuss ways to tackle the banner menace in Puducherry.
The Collector had earlier issued a deadline for political and other organisations which use public spaces for putting up wall posters, digital banners, cut-outs, and hoardings to remove the materials before October 20.
Mr. Manikandan had earlier convened a consultation meeting with representatives of political parties, police, revenue and public works department officials as per the directions of Madras High Court to implement the provisions of the Pondicherry Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act strictly.
Apparently, all political parties unanimously agreed to the decision of authorities to clamp a complete ban on wall writings, paintings, cut-outs, digital banners and hoardings.
Advertisements of government and government run institutions are exempted from the rule.
According to an action plan, failing compliance from offenders, revenue authorities have been tasked to remove such materials in line with the Puducherry Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement Act) passed in 2009.
