A group of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by party State secretary V. Saminathan were arrested here on Thursday when they attempted to picket the residence of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Speaker V. Vaithilingam in protest against the Speaker’s decision to not permit them inside the Legislative Assembly.

As the BJP members had planned to picket the residence of the Chief Minister and Speaker, a huge posse of police personnel were deployed at Ellaimman Kovil Street and Candappa Mudaliar Street. The party workers, led by Mr. Swaminathan, took out a rally to picket the residence. However, they were stopped by the police near Indira Gandhi square and arrested. They were later released.

Meanwhile, seven members of the BJP were arrested for attempting to picket the Chief Minister’s residence defying the prohibitory orders imposed by the police in the boulevard area. The workers had assembled at Mahatma Gandhi Road and were on their way to picket the residence of Mr. Narayanasamy when they were arrested.

They were remanded in custody.
