The Puducherry unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the territorial government to adopt a series of austerity measures including curbs on use of official cars and petrol consumption by bureaucrats and chairman of public sector undertakings and corporations to overcome the financial crisis.

R.V. Swaminathan, general secretary of BJP said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had brought in certain austerity measures to bring expenses under control.

Use of luxury vehicles

However, bureaucrats and Chairman of corporations in the Puducherry administration have been outsourcing luxury Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) instead of using government vehicles allotted to them draining the state exchequer.

He said that over 50 luxury SUVs have been outsourced by officials and bureaucrats involving an additional expenditure of Rs.4 crore per year.

The government should ensure that government offices and corporations do not use outsourced cars.

Over 200 vehicles available with the government departments which are in good working condition should be used till the vehicles have completed their required life, he said.
