BJP asked to ensure 25% reservation for local students

June 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The Eco Friends Welfare Society has urged the BJP to prevail upon Pondicherry University to implement 25 per cent reservation for students from the Union Territory in admission to the institution.

D.J. Peter Babu, president of the society in a memorandum to BJP MLA M. Visweswaran said that the authorities at the time of inception of the university had given an assurance that 25 per cent of seats in all departments would be allotted to the students of Union Territory of Puducherry.

However, reservation was now followed only in 20 of 54 departments while the same has been denied in other departments.

The reservation policy has to be uniform for all courses and the University cannot decide to implement reservation only in select courses.

He said that Mr. Visweswaran had assured to take up the issue with the Union Human Resources Development Ministry.
