Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Tuesday said she has sought the intervention of Government of India in implementing helmet rule in the Union Territory.
In a WhatsApp message to reporters, Ms Bedi said “we have written to Government of India to direct the Chief Minister not to obstruct enforcement of the law. We were compelled to do so.”
Reiterating her stand on the implementation of the rule, the Lt. Governor said the government was duty bound to enforce the law.
Bound by law
“Law is above all of us. The Motor Vehicles Act and court judgements are the law of the land and we are all bound by it,” she said.
On the opposition raised by political parties, Ms. Bedi said “instead of being leaders of change they are creating obstruction.”
Reacting to the incident where the AIADMK legislators threw helmets on the road as a mark of protest, Ms. Bedi said it amounted to contempt of court.
The Lieutenant Governor also visited the police headquarters and chaired a review meeting with senior officers.
In her interaction with the officers, Ms. Bedi said traffic management was an indicator and a mirror of the rule of law.
The organised traffic management in Western countries was a reflection of compliance and enforcement of rule of law.
“The police should endeavour to bring in such sort of compliance by more visibility and people-friendly approach,” she said.
