Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Sunday celebrated her 70th birthday by rededicating the Raj Nivas team to the cause of “Mission Green Puducherry”.
A Raj Nivas team, led by Ms. Bedi, launched the mission at 6 a.m. by planting saplings on Kanagan Lake banks in partnership with residents of the area. “There is no better way to dedicate god-given life received through my parents for public good,” she said.
Ms. Bedi plans to dedicate all weekend rounds to planting trees to keep the Green Puducherry Mission going. Incidentally, Sunday’s programme was the 219th morning round for Team Raj Nivas.
This would involve planting trees on the banks of waterbodies such as tanks, lakes and ponds as well as public places such as a forest, gardens, educational institutions or places of worship. Every weekend, Team Raj Nivas plans to visit a chosen or identified place to sow seeds or plant trees. The identified location chosen for the weekend round to be announced a day in advance for anyone wishing to join, be it public representatives, public officials, members of the community, students, volunteers, NGOs or activists.
Appeal to volunteers
Volunteers are requested to come along with their own seeds or saplings and gardening implements to join in the Green Puducherry Mission.
They could dedicate their saplings to their loved ones, the Raj Nivas said.
An open house was conducted at the Raj Nivas with visitors filing in to greet the Lieutenant Governor. Later, staff at Raj Nivas cut a cake to celebrate Ms. Bedi’s birthday.
Among those who turned up to greet the Lt. Governor were E. Theepainthan, MLA, and S. Sundari Nanda, Director-General of Police.
