An autorickshaw driver was hacked to death by a gang at Chinnayapuram in Muthialpet on Tuesday night. The name of the victim was given as Nagarajan, 38, of R.K. Thottam in Chinnayapuram.

The police said Nagarajan was going on his two-wheeler with his two children to a tuition centre when a gang waylaid him near his house. In a bid to escape, Mr. Nagarajan ran towards his house. However, the gang chased and hacked him.

He was rushed to the Puducherry Government General Hospital where he died.

As the news spread, relatives of Nagarajan resorted to a road blockade in Muthialpet demanding the arrest of the culprits.

Senior Superintendent of Police Apoorva Gupta pacified them following which they withdrew their protest.

Meanwhile, the police have booked a case against Allagundu, Prabhu Narayanan, Vicky and Pockamani in connection with the murder.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that Nagarajan was actively involved in social activities in the area and had recently joined the AINRC.

A group was opposed to his sudden popularity and planned to eliminate him.
