‘Files seeking financial approval now need not be sent to Finance Secretary and Chief Secretary’

The Legislative Assembly Secretariat has obtained powers to decide on expenditure matters related to the functioning of the house, Speaker R. Selvam said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in his chamber, the Speaker said the Ministry of Home Affairs had issued orders in 1981 giving financial powers to the Assembly Secretariat. However, the decision of the MHA could not be implemented due to various reasons. s

The issue had now been settled with MHA issuing necessary directions according financial powers to the Assembly Secretariat. The files seeking financial approval now need not be sent to the Finance Secretary and Chief Secretary. Notification regarding the decision would be issued next week, the Speaker said.

Mr. Selvam said he along with Deputy Speaker and Assembly Secretary would be attending the Common Wealth Parliamentary Association meeting at Guwahati next week.
