Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Saturday said that there will be no laxity on the part of the government in enforcing law and order and promised stringent action against anti-socials and rowdy elements.
Addressing newsmen here, Mr. Narayanasamy said that he had asked the police to invoke the provisions of the Goondas Act without fear or favour against criminals threatening to disrupt peace and law and order in the Union Territory.
Rein in miscreants
“The government is keen that on no account should law and order be disturbed anywhere and already strict action has been taken to rein in miscreants.
“The recent incidents of heinous crimes like murders were all offshoots of family disputes and gang rivalry between rowdies,” Mr. Narayanasamy said.
The Chief Minister pointed out that unlike during the previous regime, Puducherry has not witnessed any incident of land grab or blatant extortion of businessmen that spread insecurity among the general public and tourists. Now the administration had kept anti-socials at bay, he said.
Police officers have been asked to keep a close vigil on the anti-socials.
“There should be no slur on the reputation of Puducherry being a peaceful Union Territory,” the Chief Minister said.
Police personnel attached to the law and order and traffic wings who had served in a place for more than three years would automatically be shifted to different places, he said.
Fishermen attack
Referring to the attacks on fishermen of Karaikal region and seizure of their boats, he said he brought the issue to the notice of the Union External Affairs Minister at a meeting last week.
People from Puducherry working abroad were also facing torture and insecurity at the hands of their employers in countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Malaysia.
One worker from Veerampattinam coastal hamlet had returned to Puducherry a few days ago while five others were still being held illegally by their employers.
Six fishermen from Karaikal were behind bars and their boats were also impounded.
A special officer Y.L.N. Reddy had been appointed in Puducherry to receive complaints and process them in coordination with the Union External Affairs Ministry.
The committee for fixing of fees for PG medical students would have its meeting shortly.
The government had already taken steps to protect the students who were selected for admission, he said.
