The territorial administration will submit a detailed project report to the Union Ministry of Urban Development by March this year for including Puducherry in the Smart City project.

Minister for Public Works A. Namassivayam told presspersons here on Saturday that the Local Administration Department (LAD) was in the final phase of preparing a report and it would be sent to the Urban Development Ministry by March 2017. In the process of finalising the report, the department had been eliciting the views of the public by conducting seminars and putting up suggestion boxes. On Monday, the department would put up suggestion boxes at 10 places in the town and suburban areas to get the views of the public on Smart City, he said.

In the second week of January, the department would organise two seminars for initiating a consultation with the public and experts, he added.

Although the Oulgaret Municipality had been nominated as one of the 100 smart cities in the country, it could not make it to the final list. “We will take all steps to get the Smart City project for Puducherry,” he said.

If the project materialises, ₹500 crore would be invested on various infrastructure projects, including augmenting drinking water supply, roadwork, tourism promotion work, and improving urban transport network.

A Special Purpose Vehicle would be constituted to implement the project once the Union Government sanctions the project, he added.
