Minister for Education R. Kamalakannan, on Monday, lauded the students for their innovative projects exhibited at the Southern India Science Fair 2017.

In his valedictory speech at the Southern India Science Fair 2017 held in Puducherry, he pointed to a model sensor system the students had developed, which allows a two-wheeler to start only when the rider wears a helmet.

Apt timing

“This model is being designed aptly at a time when both the state and central governments are contemplating ways to reduce road accidents,” said the Education Minister.

Mr. Kamalakannan underlined that many science projects exhibited at the science fair dealt with real issues, which people are grappling with. He suggested that schoolchildren from various schools visiting the science fair should be allowed to spend time in understanding each project.

“Instead of taking them around the place, specific projects should be selected for each school and the children from that particular school should learn in detail about the project,” he stated.

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum Director K.G. Kumar stated that the Southern India Science Fair 2017 is entirely different when compared to science fairs held in other regions, as it is held on rotation basis in the five southern states. “This fair has recorded the highest footfall in southern science fairs. The winners in this fair are given direct entry at the national- level competitions. They can also be invited to the international meet to be held in the US in May 2018,” he said.

In the last five days, 13,881 children and 773 teachers from 127 schools, and 4,479 people visited the science fair.

The five-day Southern India Science Fair (SISF) 2017 in Puducherry was organised by the Directorate of School Education, Government of Puducherry, in collaboration with Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum.
