The territorial administration has decided to make wearing of helmets compulsory for two-wheeler riders from May 1.

The decision was taken after a review of fatal accidents involving two-wheeler riders, most of whom sustained head injuries, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said on Saturday. Sixty people died of head injuries suffered in road accidents last year.

The Chief Minister, who briefed presspersons about his government’s achievements, told presspersons here that the law and order situation had improved. He said of the 4,049 cases registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 3,215 had been solved. The police had achieved more than 90 per cent success in solving heinous crimes such as murder, attempt to murder, rape, and robbery, he said.

The number of cases of harassment of women had come down to two from 11 reported last year.

This year, he said, the police had recovered 110 stolen vehicles and arrested 12 persons involved in stealing autorickshaws. He went on to add that 18 cases of chain snatching and 23 cases of burglary were solved last year.

On the two major crimes that occurred in the past — the murder of a housewife at Muthialpet and the brutal murder of a pawn broker at Orleanpet — the Chief Minister said he had directed the police to speed up the investigation.

The government had given a free hand to curtail the activities of criminals, particularly those indulging in extortion, he said.

On police modernisation, he said the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had been approached for adequate funds. A sum of Rs. 100 crore would be needed to provide adequate infrastructure for the force, he added.

The traffic police had improved traffic signal system at three junctions and work was on at another nine signals.

The Chief Minister honoured Senior Superintendent of Police A.K. Gawas for being given award by the Election Commission for adopting the best electoral practices in the general election. Director-General of Police S.K. Gautam was present.
