Around 2,000 trucks went off the roads in Puducherry as part of the indefinite strike call given by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC).

The movement of goods and raw materials to industries in Sedurapet and Mettupalayam was affected due to the strike. However, the transport of essential commodities including milk and vegetables was not affected.

A large number of lorries were parked along the roadside near the inter-state border of Gorimedu and the truck terminal at Mettupalayam. The All India Motor Transport Congress which is spearheading the strike has demanded abolition of around 373 toll plazas in the country and revocation of the order on installation of speed governors in vehicles.

The AIMTC has demanded collection of one-time toll annually and relaxation in the TDS. The AIMTC has also urged the Centre to revoke the order on installation of speed governors in vehicles and to scrap the move to abolish 10-year-old trucks.
