Seed Mother was shot in a 16:9 format, which was one of the conditions of Nespresso Talents competition.
“As a cinematographer I learned a lot of new things about my craft and would like to shoot some more in near future to explore the format further,” says Achyutanand Dwivedi.
According to him, the format has both strengths and limitations. “The obvious strength is the perfect fit for personal devices, which pretty much everyone uses. The way eyes move in traditional format from left to right is not possible but the eyes can move from top to bottom and bottom to top which was not available in traditional format,” he said.
“We shot the film on March 19, edited almost every day and eventually uploaded the final version on March 26,” he said.
Kept under suspense
Within a week, he would get a call from Switzerland-based Nepresso that the film was shortlisted among top three — the position was not revealed until the announcement ceremony in the screening room on May 17.
The Nespresso Talents 2019 first prize in the international section was won by New Zealand’s Josh Morrice for Subak , about rice cultivation in Bali, while the second prize went to Mexican film-maker Marco Aurelio Celis’s Ruffo .
Although he could not get to see as many films as he would have liked, he ranks as among his favourite Cannes memories going to the red carpet of Les Siffleurs (The Whistlers) starring Polish actress Magdalena Boczarska.
