Periyar University entered in the international arena in research by bagging an University Grants Commission (UGC) – United Kingdom Indian Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) project.
A. Elangovan, Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, joined Hulya Dagdeviren, Professor of Economic Development, Business School, University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, and developed and applied a project titled “Access to land: Implications of customary and private land rights for food security”.
This is the first international project for the Periyar University. The project fund is £ 200000 (in terms of Indian rupees it is nearly ₹2 crore).
The project approved letter stated that UKIERI received an overwhelming number of good proposals which were assessed through a multiple tier evaluation process and each proposal was evaluated by both the UK and Indian experts against the self evaluation criterion, an official press release of Periyar University issued here said.
The project envisages that the research team of Periyar University under the project head Prof. Elangovan can visit the University of Hertfordshire and exchange research resource and innovative ideas. On the other hand a team under the head of Prof. Hulya Dagdeviren will visit Periyar University and conduct research survey in South India.
This project is for three years. The main aim of this project is to study how the frequent changes in the land tenure practices impact agricultural operations, consequently affect the food security. In the globalised scenario, a lot has been changed in the land holdings of the people. In this backdrop conducting a study assumes more significance.
At the end of the project a model will be created and the model will be implemented in the study area and some of the area of some other countries.
