Mumbai: Mumbai-based Brij Mohan Chaturvedi, who heads chartered accounts’ (CA) firm B.M. Chaturvedi & Co, has applied to the Guinness World Records and the Limca Book of Records seeking recognition to be the only family in the world having five generations from the same bloodline joining the profession of chartered accountancy.

Mr. Chaturvedi, the third generation CA, has applied for the coveted title after his granddaughter Mohini Chaturvedi, recently qualified as a CA, in the process of joining the profession.

It was late Bishambar Nath (B.N.) Chaturvedi, hailing from a Sankrit scholar’s family in Mathura, who first became a CA in 1925 after doing apprenticeship under U.K.-trained Irani Audit firm in Delhi.

He, the first English graduate from his community, is said to have created a trend for people joining this profession. An estimated 500 Mathura Chaturvedis are believed to have turned CAs.

In the next generation, B.N. Chaturvedi’s sons — Amar Nath and Dina Nath — became CAs, the former joining in 1955.

In the third generation, Mr. Amar Nath’s son B.M. Chaturvedi, the applicant, joined the profession in 1976.

Two of his own brothers Madan Mohan and Subodh had also joined the profession along with his cousin Srikant M Chaturvedi, the son of Mr. Dina Nath.

In the fourth generation, the family has Apurva and Rishabh, the sons of Mr. Madan Mohan, the grandson of the patriarch, joining in 2006. This generation also has Tina Chaturvedi, a CA, who is the daughter of Mr. B.M. Chaturvedi’s sister Alka.

The applicant’s three children did not join the profession, but his youngest daughter Shruti’s daughter Mohini is set to start practice.

“To the best of our knowledge, we are the only family in the world to have five generations of CAs coming from direct blood relation. As the head of the family, I have applied for the world record,” Mr. B.M. Chaturvedi said.

“We have also approached the American Institute of CPAs and the Institute of Chartered Accounts of England and Wales for recognition,” he said.

He said so far, 11 of his direct blood relatives are CAs as compared to the Guinness World Records’ data of five CAs from one family, namely David Omueya Dafinone, in Nigeria. Two more Chaturvedi family members are set to join the profession later this year.

The fifth generation Mohini, a commerce graduate and CA, who is the great great granddaughter of the first CA of the family, said she was drawn to this profession as a child.
