What is the compulsion to go with Sanjay Deshmukh, asks former VC

MUMBAI: Former Mumbai University (MU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Bhalchandra Mungekar on Wednesday questioned Governor Vidyasagar Rao for giving a long rope to VC Sanjay Deshmukh despite the results mess.

“I don’t understand the compulsion of the authority to continue with the VC, who has made a mockery of the examination system,” said Mr. Mungekar.

The former Rajya Sabha member attacked the university for continuing to engage with MeritTrac, which, despite causing chaos, is set to conduct the online assessment for the October-November examinations.

“Switching to online assessment is certainly desirable, but it must be implemented in a planned manner over the next two-three years. However, MeritTrac doesn’t have sufficient infrastructure,” said Mr. Mungekar.

Varsity in the news

The university has been in the news for being unable to declare the April examinations’ results by June-end or the first week of July.

On September 19, the MU announced having declared all results. Mr. Mungekar, however, alleged that there are still 11,000 students without results. The former VC also criticised the university’s decision to give average marks to around 1,600 students.

The Controller of Examinations could not be reached to verify the allegations despite several attempts.

Mr. Mungekar also suggested measures to overcome the crisis. He said the university should be divided into three regional zones: colleges in Mumbai city, colleges in the suburban areas, and colleges in areas like Ratnagiri, Raigad and Sindhudurg.

“The implementation of a ‘matrix structure’ — a decentralisation of administrative responsibilities — will reduce the load,” he said.
