A fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building in Thane district of Maharashtra, killing two people and injuring two others. The incident happened around 5.30 a.m. on Sunday.

The fire broke out in a penthouse on the 12th floor of the building at Sundarban Park in Thane, a satellite township of Mumbai. Two senior citizens died in the blaze even as their daughter and grandchildren managed to escape.

Ten fire engines and ten water tankers were rushed to the spot. The fire brigade managed to douse the flames within an hour of the mishap.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but preliminary findings indicate that it could be because of a short circuit. An Accidental Death Register (ADR) has been filed by the local police.

The building houses around 25 flats which were evacuated immediately after the incident.
