A 36-year-old real estate agent from Thane thought it would be a good idea to brandish an illegally procured gun to scare his wife but she got so scared that she informed the police, who arrested him earlier this week.

According to the Kasarwadavli police, the accused, Bhan Chand, has been married for around nine years and has two children. Mr. Chand deals in real estate and his wife used to be his employee.

Marital discord

“The couple has been having some problems for the last five to six months, as Mr. Chand’s wife suspected him of cheating on her. On Thursday morning , they had another fight, during which he assaulted her with a leather belt and then whipped out a revolver, threatening to kill her. He then walked out of the house and never returned,” senior police inspector Kishore Khairnar, Kasarwadavli police station said.

His wife later approached the police, who registered the complaint and started trying to trace and apprehend him. Mr. Chand, however, was constantly changing his locations and his cell phone, too, was switched off. Not wanting to waste any more time, the police tried a different method.

“Acting on our instructions, his wife called up several of his friends and told them to ask Mr. Chand to call her in case they spoke to him. He called in the afternoon and she told him that the kids were missing him badly, and that he should come to meet them once. After some convincing, he agreed to meet her at a hotel in Andheri on Thursday night,” an officer who was part of the operation said.

The chase, however, was far from over. Just as Mr. Chand reached the hotel, the local police also reached the spot, as they had orders to shut the hotel down due to some violations. Much to the consternation of the Kasarwadavli police, who were lying in wait in plain clothes, Mr. Chand fled the scene as soon as he saw the uniformed policemen.

This led to a chase after which Mr. Chand was nabbed on Ghodbunder Road, and a countrymade revolver along with two live rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.

“We have charged him with assault and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Arms Act. He has been remanded in police custody till June 17, and we are interrogating him to find out the source of the weapon as well as his intention behind procuring it,” Mr. Khairnar said.
