The body of 19-year-old Mukul Saha, who had gone missing from Marwe beach in Malad during Chhath Puja on Sunday, washed ashore at the beach on Monday.

Saha, a resident of Pathanwadi in Borivali, was last seen trying to save a 10-year-old boy who was swept away in the waves on Sunday morning. While the boy’s body was found on Sunday, search operations were under way for Saha till Monday.

“The fire brigade and a Navy team reached the beach when Saha went missing. Saha’s body was found at 6.30 p.m. on Monday and taken to Bhagwati Hospital for post-mortem,” police sub-inspector Tatya Kharat, Malwani police station, said.

Saha is survived by his parents, two sisters, and a brother, all of whom were plunged into shock. Saha’s father runs a snacks stall in Borivali. Bihari Yadav Slum in Pathanwadi, where the Sahas stay, wore a look of gloom on Tuesday.

“I cannot describe how much his loss has impacted us. We have lost a support system and a breadwinner in the family,” Saha’s mother Shehla said.

His sisters Goldy and Kajal, both in their early 20s, talked about Saha’s love for children. “We left for Marwe beach around 4 a.m. and the last we saw our brother was at 6 a.m.,’ Ms. Kajal said.

His neighbours spoke of Saha’s amiable nature and his favourite spots in the chawl. The Malwani police have registered an accidental death report.
