Midas touch: Parag Shah, BJP candidate from Ghatkopar West, greets supporters on Thursday.

Parag Shah of the BJP, the richest candidate in the polls as he had declared assets worth ₹500 crore, won from Ghatkopar East by defeating Satish Pawar of the MNS by a margin of 53,319 votes. The candidature of Mr. Shah had generated controversy from the start. He was given the ticket at the last minute in place of former MLA and ex-housing minister Prakash Mehta.

The denial of ticket to Mr. Mehta led to an agitation and resulted in party workers vandalising Mr. Shah’s car. The former minister had to come to his rescue giving a way out to him. Mr. Mehta was denied the ticket after the Lokayukta allegedly found him violating laws in a housing scam. The report has however not been made public by the State government
