Strict checks on eateries needed

Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday said that the existing Public Health Act was outdated and needs to be amended to keep a strict check on hotels and other eateries.

“More power needs to be given to the Medical Officer to keep a check on eateries. Illegal eateries like restaurants, small hotels, canteens requires strict inspection,” he said.

However, Mr. Rane said that while amending the Public Health Act the stakeholders from the hotel industry would be taken into consideration.

The Minister’s statement comes in the wake of recent raids on certain restaurants and canteens which were found operating in unhygienic conditions and cancellation of their licenses by the Foods and Drugs Authority.
