Mumbai: A Thane-based paediatrician was brutally assaulted by two men on Monday night.

Dr. Prashant Darandale was stepping out from his residence in Kasarvadavli when the duo attacked him with bamboo sticks and fled. The doctor with multiple fractures was taken to Jupiter Hospital.

According to the police, the incident occurred between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. near Yashraj Park.

“The area is not covered under CCTV. We have taken the statement of the doctor. Probe is on,” investigating officer Sandeep Patil said. The police are finding out if the attack was due to any personal or professional enmity or by relatives of a patient.

Violence against doctors has been rampant over the past few years, mainly in public hospitals.

Dr. Alok Modi, a member of the medico legal cell of the Association of Medical Consultants, said the incident is shocking. “We all thought that it was an attack by relatives. But the police are now investigating the motive,” Dr. Modi said.

Another doctor who did not wish to be named said the brutality of the attack is extremely concerning.
