A 35-year-old Borivali resident died and five others were injured in an accident involving multiple vehicles in Jogeshwari on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred on the Jogeshwari flyover at 5.30 a.m. “A truck travelling on the north-bound lane skidded and crashed through the divider, after which it collided with an oncoming Maruti WagonR in the south-bound lane. A motorbike behind the WagonR also collided with the vehicles,” an officer with the Jogeshwari police station said.

While Badruddin Ansari, who was driving the truck, died on the spot, the other five victims were rushed to the Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari (East).

The police said the other occupants of the truck, identified as Jamaluddin Ansari (40), Gajendra Gupta (31) and Dilip Gupta (35), are now stable. Kaustabh Puri (33), who was driving the WagonR, was critically injured and shifted to the Kokilaben Hospital by his family.

Meanwhile, Raju Vishvakarma (27), who was on the motorbike, suffered from a stomach injury and lacerations on his arm but is now stable and has recorded his statement, based on which the police have registered a complaint.

‘Blacked out’

Recalling the accident, Mr. Gupta said, “We were all returning from the Vashi vegetable market after picking up vegetables and taking them to Borivali. Initially, it felt as if the tyre had burst. Next thing we knew, the vehicle skidded and hit the divider and I blacked out.”

The police, however, inspected the truck and confirmed that the tyres had not burst. “We suspect that the driver of the truck lost balance due to the slippery road. It had rained heavily in the morning,” Dinkar Raut, police inspector, Jogeshwari police station, said.

The police have posthumously booked Ansari for endangering life and causing injury due to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. A summary report seeking that the case be closed as the accused is deceased will soon be filed by the police in court.
