The general body of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Saturday passed a proposal of the Fire Department to purchase six fire-fighting vehicles at an estimated cost of ₹9.05 crore.

The proposal will now be tabled before the civic standing committee for final approval. According to the proposal, the department needs a fire jeep, a mini fire engine, an X-type fire engine, an emergency rescue tender and two 15,000-litre capacity water bowsers with a 15-metre high tower system.

“We have four fire stations under the NMMC at Nerul, Vashi, CBD Belapur and Airoli. A fifth one is coming up at Koparkhairane. Five of the proposed machines are for the Koparkhairne fire station, while one water bowser is for the Belapur fire station,” said an official.

Corporators have said the death of a mother and daughter in a recent fire in Airoli could have been avoided if the department had adequate machinery. “High-end machinery is the need of the hour,” said Airoli corporator Manoj Haldankar.
