A police constable with the Antop Hill police station has been suspended after a woman complained to senior police officers that he had sexually as well as financially exploited her after promising to marry her. The complainant alleged he was already married and had abandoned her.
According to police sources, the constable has been identified as Santosh Nalawade, 27. The police said the victim approached the office of the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai late in March this year with a complaint against him, after which inquiries were initiated.
“The victim has said in her complaint that she met Nalawade around three years ago, when he was a frequent visitor to her street food stall. Their friendship soon developed into an affair, and Nalawade started asking her for money,” said a senior police officer.
The victim has alleged that the demands for money soon changed into demands for expensive gifts, and in the course of three years, Nalawade made her buy several things for him including a high-end cell phone and a motorbike. She has further alleged in her complaint that around a year ago, Nalawade started avoiding her and ultimately told her that he wanted to snap ties with her. When asked why, he refused to answer. Finally, she approached the police top brass.
After verifying the allegations made by the victim, the investigating officers asked the victim to register an FIR against Nalawade under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The woman, however, declined, saying an FIR would bring serious disrepute to Nalawade’s family for no fault of theirs, and she did not want to cause any more trouble for Nalawade’s wife than she already had.
“Nalawade has been placed under suspension and a departmental enquiry has been initiated against him. Further action will be decided based on the findings of the DE,” said the officer.
