PIL on ‘Satyamev Jayate’ dismissed

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed a public interest litigation objecting to using ‘Satyamev Jayate’ in actor Aamir Khan’s show on Star Plus.

A division Bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice A.A. Sayed was hearing a PIL filed by Manoranjan Roy, alleging that the use of the words, ‘Satyamev Jayate’, is in violation of the State Emblem of India (Prohibition and Improper Use) Act, and the State Emblem of India (Regulation of Use) Rules.

The court said prohibition is only for the use of the emblem as a whole and not the motto, ‘Satyameva Jayate’, separately. The court also said that there is no merit in the petition to show the programme’s logo is an imitation of the emblem.

Recently, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had filed an affidavit stating the use of ‘Satyameva Jayate’ was not in violation of the Act and the Rules. “The Act and the Rules prohibit improper use of the State emblem of India as a whole,” the affidavit said.
