January 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 23, 2016 03:11 am IST - Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to Jerrit John, who was charged for flinging acid at his former girlfriend in November 2012. John (38) was arrested and detained in November 2012, and convicted last year for five years.

He had moved the High Court to appeal against his conviction. John had thrown an acid-like substance at his former girlfriend at her residence in Worli. She had suffered injuries to her eye and tongue and was discharged from the hospital the same day.

The charge of attempt to murder was added later by the Dadar police station. A single-judge bench of Justice Abhay Thipsay, while hearing his appeal on Monday, granted him bail stating he had served more than three years in jail.

The court observed that the “medical evidence does not support the allegations”.
