The Indian Navy on Monday launched a rescue operation to save the crew of the vessel stuck mid-sea due to inclement weather near Vasai about 40 nautical miles off Mumbai harbour. It rescued the 20-member crew from Jindal Kamakshi which had sent a distress signal around midnight.

"We have successfully rescued all people from Indian Merchant vessel Jindal Kamakshi," Navy spokesperson D.K. Sharma said.

The distress message had indicated that vessel had listed (tilted) heavily battling bad weather and heavy rain and it had a crew of 20 persons. The rescue team contacted the vessel and tried to improve stability of the tilted ship. However, after the efforts failed to yield any result. At around 7 a.m., the crew requested evacuation.

The vessel was anchored around 40 nautical miles north-west of Mumbai harbour position and some 25 nautical miles into sea off the coast of Vasai.
