The Nhava Sheva police has arrested one Abdul Ansari, who is accused of cheating. He would accost people on their way to banks, feed them sad stories and then cheat them of their money.

Accomplice on the run

He was arrested while trying to cheat a customer outside an IDBI bank branch, but his accomplice escaped, and the police are searching for him.

According to Senior Police Inspector Chetan Kakade, Mr. Ansari is originally from Bihar, and would target people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Mr. Kakade said, “He would say that he had some cash which he wanted to deposit in the bank, but did not have an account. He would then ask the customer to deposit the cash for him. He would hand over a bundle of notes, and ask the victim for some money.”

His accomplice, who would be in the vicinity, would join in the conversation, telling the victim that Ansari came from the same village and was trustworthy. On going into the bank, Mr. Kakade said, the customer would find that while the top of the bundle was a genuine currency note, the rest were blank paper.

String of cases

Mr. Ansari and his partner are accused of cheating people across Navi Mumbai and Mumbai, and have six cases registered against them: three with the APMC police, and one each with police stations in Vashi, Uran and Nhava Sheva.
