Mumbai: A 35-year-old resident of Mira Road was arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting a woman he met on a matrimonial website after promising to marry her.

The Navghar police said that the accused, identified as Rajesh Angwalkar, is a supervisor with a private firm in Mumbai.

Mr. Angwalkar had registered with a matrimonial website earlier this year and had been interacting with various women.

“In May, Mr. Angwalkar and the victim, who aged 35 years, started chatting. After days of conversations, they met at a hotel in June. Shortly after their first meeting, Mr. Angwalkar expressed his desire to marry the woman and she reciprocated. Mr. Angwalkar convinced her to have intercourse with him with the promise of marriage,” said a police officer.

The exploitation continued and Mr. Angwalkar kept telling the victim that they would get married soon.

However, in early October, he told the victim that he was no longer interested in marrying her and that she should inform her family about it. After confiding in some friends, the victim told her parents after which they approached the police.

“We recorded the statement of the victim, and we registered a case of rape under the Indian Penal Code against Mr. Angwalkar. He was picked up at his residence on Saturday and arrested,” the officer said.

The police are interrogating Mr. Angwalkar to find out if he has exploited other girls. The investigating team will be examining his interactions with other women on the website.

Inquiries will also be made in the hotels where Mr. Angwalkar is alleged to have taken the victim.
