Days after a 22-year-old student from Nanded was allegedly killed and set ablaze by her family over her relationship, the district police on Friday announced the arrest of five persons.

The victim, Shubhangi Jogdand, a third-year student of Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery, from Pimpri Mahipal village, was in love with a man from her village. Her family members fixed her marriage with another person. After she told them about her relationship, the wedding was called off.

Upset over her relationship, the woman’s father, brother, uncle and two cousins took her to their farm on the evening of January 22, and strangled her to death, before setting the body on fire. Later, they threw her remains in a stream to destroy the evidence, police said.

A case under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the accused persons. They were arrested on Friday.
