A two-year-old boy, who was kidnapped on July 6, was rescued on Thursday in a joint operation by the Mumbra Police and the Thane Police Crime Branch. The police arrested Nagesh Pasi, a friend of the victim’s family, who tried to extort ₹5 lakh as ransom.
The Mumbra police said the accused abducted Akash Pasi while accompanying the boy and his uncle Avdesh Kumar for a walk. “Mr. Pasi told the uncle to fetch a bag from a nearby store. When he returned, Mr. Pasi and Akash had disappeared,” an officer with the Thane Crime Branch said. The boy’s father, Monu Kumar, then filed a complaint with the Mumbra police. The Unit I of the Thane Crime Branch conducted parallel investigations into the case. On Thursday, Mr. Pasi called Luvkush Pasi, a relative of the boy who lived in Uttar Pradesh, and demanded ₹5 lakh in cash. The information was passed on to Mr. Kumar, who alerted the police.
The officer said, “We traced the caller to Mumbai Central and tracked him to Boisar.” The police sent a team to Boisar and rescued Akash. Mr. Pasi was arrested and charged with kidnapping under the Indian Penal Code. Thane police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar on Friday congratulated the investigating team for their speedy and efficient work in reuniting Akash with his parents.
