The Mulund police on Monday arrested a history-sheeter in connection with the murder of a 67-year-old woman at her residence.

Rukmani Visariya, who lived alone in Trivedi Bhuvan on RRT Road, was found smothered to death on the night of September 8. An officer said, “After eliminating motives like personal or property-related enmity, we probed the possibility of the murder being a robbery gone wrong.” The officer said the inquiries led them to a Thane resident with many burglary cases registered against him in police stations across Mumbai.

The suspect was picked up on Sunday evening and brought to the police station for inquiries. The police said that he was grilled for several hours and arrested on Monday morning.

“Rukmani had gone to her native place in Gujarat for 90 days and had returned just a day before she was murdered. We suspect that the accused had scoped out her house earlier and broke into it on the night of the murder thinking that she was still away,” the officer said.

The accused has been charged with murder under the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in court on Tuesday.

“The exact sequence of events on the night of the murder is still being put together. We are also trying to find out whether anyone else was involved in the offence,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mulund division) P.N. Shinde said.
