The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a red alert for Thursday with rainfall this month (914 mm) set to breach the 920-mm mark, the city’s all-time record for September.
So far this season, the city has received 3,480 mm rainfall, well beyond its annual average of 2,510 mm.
On Tuesday, there were heavy showers in Thane and Navi Mumbai, while the city received 4.8 mm rainfall until 8.30 a.m. and 0.4 mm till 5.30 p.m.
According to the IMD, more rain is expected over the next two days due to the formation of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours and possible westward movement. The IMD has forecast ‘heavy rain at isolated places’ on Wednesday and ‘extremely heavy rain at isolated places’ on Thursday for Mumbai and Thane.
“Many stations in Thane and Navi Mumbai have recorded more than 6-7cm rainfall. Satellite images indicate active weather conditions over South and Central India,” tweeted K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general, IMD.
Private forecaster Skymet’s chief meteorologist Mahesh Palawat tweeted, “A cyclonic circulation over Madhya Maharashtra will give heavy to very heavy rains over Mumbai and suburbs on September 19 and 20. Waterlogging and difficulty in commuting to work and school expected.”
