Mumbai: The city on Sunday got a hospital that is dedicated to cardiac care and aims to reduce the ‘door to balloon time’ for patients. ‘Door to balloon time’ is the period from the time a person has the first symptoms of a heart attack to the time they are provided treatment from 60 minutes to 90 minutes.
Mumbai Heart Centre at Pestom Sagar, Chembur, is an initiative of Rane Hospital, which is called Project 60. The project has tied up with a private ambulance service enabled with a tracking mobile application.
Each ambulance is equipped with a hand-held electrocardiogram device, which will facilitate performing electrocardiogram on the way to hospital and transmit the report to the cardiologist concerned. The cardiologist can suggest on-the-spot treatment and be prepared with the necessary arrangements upon the patient’s arrival.
The heart centre has 52 beds and six cardiologists who have an average experience of 25 years. Each cardiologist will be available for an entire day in a week.
Dr. Sandip Rane, one of the founders of the hospital, said his experience of medical services abroad made him work towards opening a heart centre in India. “I had undergone a heart surgery abroad a few years ago; that made me think why can’t we provide such facilities in our country so that people don’t have to travel so far and spend so much.”
The heart centre also provides cardiac rehabilitation to people who have had heart-related treatments. Dr. Rane said there are a very few places in the country which provide this service. “We have highly qualified cardiologist and yoga instructors to guide patients and improve their health.”
The director of cardiology department at Jaslok Hospital, Dr. Ashwin Mehta, who inaugurated the heart centre, said, “It’s great to see state-of-the-art facilities being provided in the city. The centre will not only offer the best treatment possible but also set a benchmark for medical services.”
